Elliptical trainers are also known as cross trainers and are an excellent cardio trainer that is low impact yet high intensity.
Ellipticals are a stationary exercise machine that mimics the way one climbs stairs, walks or runs.
The difference is they move with the feet which eliminates any pressure on joints making it a low to virtually no impact workout.
Fantastic for those suffering from knee or hip pain, they are an excellent way to maintain your cardiovascular fitness without further damaging the body.
Elliptical trainers not only work the lower body but they can also work the upper body too. Many trainers have handles that move along with the legs which make for an upper body workout as well.
There are many different models on the market, we have completed a detailed guide on the best ellipticals.

Incline
The Schwinn 430 includes 6 levels of incline up to 10 degrees. Incline cannot be controlled via the computer so to change this you need to get off the elliptical and manually lift the lever which increases the incline.
Heart Rate Monitoring
Pulse points are located on the stationary handles which relay the information back to the computer display.
Drive
Powered by a heavy-duty V-belt drive system the perimeter weighted flywheel provides a consistent moment making it smooth and stable.
The pedal bars have large wheels and the sealed ball bearings make for smooth and long operation. Small ball bearings are also used in the joints of the arms.
Resistance
It uses an eddy current system which means it needs to be connected to a 120V circuit. Included with the purchase is the required 9VDC 1500mA AC adapter.
The machines control unit or screen is where the user can adjust the resistance level. Simply push the keys on the console to increase or decrease the resistance while pedaling.
If you are using a pre-programmed workout then the computer adjusts the resistance for you automatically.
As there is no contact between the resistance this is a very quiet elliptical and you can expect little to no wear and tear on the resistance elements.
Frame and Parts
The frame comes in two main pieces which connect in the middle with a stability bar. The front is the larger piece with the perimeter weighted flywheel. This is the integration of the drive and resistance system with the rear being the footplates and rails.
Parts are all-steel construction and are coated with a scratch and corrosion-resistant paint.
The frame itself rests on 3 bases with the rear and mid bases being equipped with rubberized stabilizers that can be adjusted.
The front base of the elliptical has rotating caps that serve as transport wheels. Although it is sturdy and has a weight of 168 pounds, you won’t want to move it once assembled.
The pedals are oversized, large and comfortable and are designed with a ribbed finish which provides excellent traction to your shoes.
Handlebars
There are two sets of handlebars on this elliptical, both mobile and fixed. Both have rubberized grips for comfort and can support a variety of workout postures. Pulse sensors are located only on the fixed handlebars which relay the heart rate information back to the display.
Also, between the handlebars are two accessory holders which provide space for a water bottle and the second is molded into the machine. This could be suited to a remote, phone or small accessories.
Assembly
ASs mentioned this elliptical is comprised of two main parts, putting it together depends on your mechanical background and confidence in doing so. If you are unsure then it would be worthwhile hiring someone to piece it together professionally.
The drive system and resistance all come pre-assembled so all you need to connect is the two main frame pieces, front base tube, the console mast, pedals, arms, and console.
All the tools need to put it together are included in the purchase as well as the manual for clear instructions.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance will prolong the life of your elliptical. An important part is ensuring the rails are free of any debris as this will damage rails and gliding wheels if left there.
Greasing the rails from time to time is also recommended as are the arms and pedals. If you notice or hear a squeak then do it ASAP.
Wipe any sweat down with a disinfectant wipe or spray bottle with a cloth.
